The Best Laid Plans

Every Sunday Mr. T. and I have an informal scheduling committee meeting for the week, talking about what's going on and what we'd like to do every day. We coordinate workout times so we have like-minded expectations. And so far, this has worked well.

But then about Wednesday, at least recently, real life kicks in. As of late these distractions have taken the form of the flu, colds, viruses, and snow days. Take this week for instance. Meet this week's training journal:

  • Sunday: long runs for both Jason and Nikki; Nikki--lift
  • Monday: Nikki--early swim; Jason--evening swim
  • Tuesday: Nikki--early bike; Jason--group bike @ night
  • Wednesday: Nikki--early swim; Jason--night swim
  • Thursday: Nikki--early bike  & lift flu symptoms in the early AM--sleep trumped a workout; Jason--night bike with group
  • Friday: Nikki--early swim; afternoon run sleep once again trumped workouts with persistent unwellness; Jason--mid-day swim opts to watch kids so Nikki can attempt to catch up on income-earning work; notices the beginning of flu symptoms
  • Saturday: Jason- Long bike--survive full-blown stomach bug; Nikki--long bike--Keep Jason hydrated & take care of busy kids
  • Sunday: long runs for both of us; Nikki--lift
We hadn't intended to miss workouts for several consecutive days, but life just took over. And we're learning that if we don't sleep or rest when our bodies demand it, we'll be looking at more than just a couple days of missed workouts. And it IS January. February will come soon enough. And then March. And then, yeah, you get the idea. The biggest race is still over 250 days away, so while it looms in the future, immediate needs trump future desires.

Still, we both readily recognize that what we do today will eventually pay off this summer. As a friend of mine told me last week, we're banking some cash that we plan on pulling out in July, August, and September. Hopefully we can put some major deposits in this week. :-)
